STELLA

We have so enjoyed having Stella with us this past week and thank Chloe for sharing her with us. We have never met a beagle with a better temperament. She is a very sweet, affectionate and funny dog. She does not seem to have an aggressive bone in her body - she is good with other dogs as well as with children. She has excellent recall, so we felt comfortable walking her off leash in safe areas of Central Park. And boy does she love to romp! In a word, Stella is just a joy!

However, whoever adopts Stella must understand that she is a work in progress. She does not walk well on leash, and, although she is not very big, she is quite strong. She also will jump up and grab food that is on the table or in someone's hand. She does not like to be left alone and we would hear her whimpering and scratching at the door whenever we left her - but we have not really tested how long the whimpering continued. Fortunately, we have had no complaints from neighbors! In addition, she is not entirely housebroken. She used the wee wee pads sometimes in our apartment, but sometimes used the carpet! Although she was taken out very often, she didn't seem to grasp that walks around the block were for going to the bathroom. She sniffed and greeted everyone, but had little interest in doing her business. Stella also needs a lot of activity - we ran her every day in the park for a couple of hours and after that she was calmer.

All in all, with the right owner, Stella will grow into an even more wonderful dog. She will surely be an extraordinary companion.

Here are a few recommendations:

Leash training
1) balanced leash halter - with ground work (picture will be sent under separate cover)
2) feed at right or left calf-feed meals on walks
3) clicker training walks

House training - need  to understand what schedule and logistics have been employed to
date.  Limit access to carpets.

4) Desensitize Loud noises

5) Grates on street
